"Today we are looking at the AMD Sempron 2600 which is a budget processor in the Sempron range. The AMD Sempron 2600 has some differences compared to the Sempron 3100 also featured in this review, the first difference is that the Sempron 2600 is a full 64bit processor unlike the Sempron 3100 used in this review which has 64bit disabled, the second difference is that the Sempron 2600 processor has a 128K Level 2 Cache while the Sempron 3100 has a 256K Level 2 Cache and the third difference is that the Sempron 2600 runs at 1.6Ghz compared to 1.8Ghz with the Sempron 3100."

COMMENT - "We will now be using various games to benchmark the two Sempron processors to show their gaming performance. Remember that if a game is less than 28% slower and still playable on the Sempron 2600 then it's a victory. The Sempron 2600 is 20% slower using Comanche4, 35% slower using Doom3, 29% slower using Scrapland, 18% slower using Tribes Vengeance, 14% slower using Unreal Tournament 2004 and 29% slower using Warhammer - Dawn of War. The Sempron 2600 offered good value for money with Comache4, Tribes Vengeance and Unreal Tournament 2004. The Sempron 3100 offered good value for money with Doom3, Scrapland and Warhammer - Dawn of War, these three games favoured the extra 200Mhz clock speed and larger level 2 cache found on the Sempron 3100. The good news for the Sempron 2600 is that it offered best value for money for half of the six games benchmarked."

CONCLUSION - "The Sempron 2600 performed very well especially when you consider it has a lower clockspeed and half of the Level 2 Cache found on the Sempron 3100. The Sempron 2600 performed especially well during the Synthetic Benchmarks and there was only an 11% difference in performance between the Sempron 2600 and Sempron 3100. Gaming performance is a different story and the Sempron 2600 was 24% slower than the Sempron 3100 which means that the Sempron 2600 is only marginally better value for money when you are talking about game performance. It comes down to which is the most important, a saving of 28% which is $25 or an extra 24% gaming performance?"
